New & Teen Drivers

In Georgia, you must be at least 15 years of age and pass a knowledge exam to apply for an Instructional Permit. You must be at least 16 years of age, have held an Instructional Permit for at least one year and one day, have completed a DDS-approved driver education course from a certified driver training school compliant with Joshua’s Law, and pass a road skills test to apply for a Provisional Driver’s License. You must be at least 18 years of age to exchange a Provisional License for a Class C driver’s license. If you are 18 years of age or older and do not have a Provisional License, you must pass a knowledge exam and road skills test to apply for a Class C driver’s license.

New Georgia residents with a valid out-of-state driver’s license have 30 days from becoming a Georgia resident to exchange it for a Georgia license. If your out-of-state license has been expired for two years or more, you will be required to take a written exam and a road skills test.

Motorcycles

In Georgia, you must be at least 17 years of age and pass a knowledge exam, and pass a road skills test to apply for a Class M motorcycle license. Who has to take the written test?

Anyone who is getting their driver's license for the first time must pass the written test. This test is taken in order to receive a learner's permit, which then qualifies the applicant to make a reservation for the on-road test. Once they pass the on-road test, they will receive a regular Class C license. Teens can take the test if they are at least 15 years old (though they must hold their permit for at least 12 months prior to taking the on-road examination).

You do not have to retake the written test when you renew your license unless it has been expired for more than 2 years.

If you hold a valid driver's license from another state, or a license that has not been expired for more than 2 year, then you are not required to take either part (written or on-road) of the driver's examination.

Anyone who is getting their driver's license for the first time must pass an on-road test. Teens must be at least 16 years old and have held a driving permit for at least 12 months in order to be eligible to take the on-road test. If they're under 18 years of age, they will also need parental consent, and if less than 17 years of age then proof of successful completion of an approved Driver's Education course is also required. Additionally, you will also be required to re-pass both tests if your driver's license has been expired for over 2 years and you want to renew it.

There are 40 questions on the test, split into two groups of 20 questions.

Any operator or passenger of a motorcycle who is under 18 is required to wear a protective helmet meeting state-approved safety standards at all times while operating or riding on the motorcycle.


Boaters in Georgia who are under the age of 16 are required to complete a boating safety course and pass an exam approved by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) in order to receive one.
